The Performance Issue

Your browser is fine quietly eating 8 GB of RAM.

Measured, not remembered

Numbers we've actually watched Chrome do this quarter.

Every recommendation on this site is benchmarked on real hardware. We publish the raw runs. These four are the ones most worth your Tuesday afternoon.

This week's long read

The memory leak that wasn't. A field guide.

You are not imagining it. Chrome's process model keeps a copy of the rendering engine, JS interpreter, and security sandbox for every site — the cost is the point, until it isn't.

The five-minute triage that returns four gigabytes.

A step you can run before coffee. Open the built-in task manager, sort by memory footprint, and be surprised who's winning.

  1. Press Shift + Esc (Windows) or Search + Esc (Mac) to open the task manager.
  2. Enable Memory Saver at chrome://settings/performance and restart.
  3. Flip Proactive Tab Freeze and Discard in chrome://flags.
  4. Exempt your email and two work apps so they don't get discarded.
  5. Audit extensions — three are usually eating more than your tabs.

The canon · updated weekly

Nine guides worth reading before you add one more tab.

Organized by what they fix, not by what Google calls them. Every entry is dated, benchmarked, and pruned when the UI changes under our feet.

A short letter, every Friday.

One benchmark, one fix, one flag that's about to change. No affiliate roundups, no "top 10" bait, no AI-generated filler. About four minutes to read, shorter on slow weeks.
