Claude Code Skills Context Window Exceeded Error Fix

The context window exceeded error is a hard wall. When the total tokens in your session — conversation history, skill definitions, file contents, and tool outputs — exceed Claude’s limit, the model cannot continue. This guide explains why it happens specifically when using Claude Code skills, and gives you practical, tested fixes.

Why Skills Make Context Window Errors More Likely

Skills are .md files loaded into your session context when you invoke them with /skill-name. A skill like supermemory or tdd might be 300-800 tokens on its own. If you invoke three or four skills in a long session, you are burning 1,000–3,000 tokens on skill definitions before you write a single line of productive prompt.

Common patterns that trigger the error:

Immediate Fix: Save Context and Start Fresh

When you see the error mid-session, the fastest recovery is:

  1. Ask Claude to summarize before the window fully closes:
Summarize what we have accomplished so far:
- Files modified and what changed
- Decisions made
- Outstanding tasks
Keep it under 200 words.
  1. Copy that summary.
  2. Start a new Claude Code session.
  3. Open with: “Continuing from previous session: [paste summary]. Next task: …”

This is faster than trying to compress the existing session.

Fix 1: Never Paste File Content — Use Read Calls

The single biggest context consumer is pasting file content into the prompt. Instead, reference the file by path:

Here is my auth.ts: [1000 lines of code pasted here]

# Do this instead:
Read src/auth.ts and identify the token validation function

Claude Code can read files directly from your filesystem. Reserve pasting for small, targeted snippets only.

Fix 2: Scope Skill Invocations Per Session

Each skill you invoke adds its definition to context. Invoke only what you need for the current task:

# Better: one skill per focused session
# Session 1: /tdd — write the test suite

Fix 3: Trim Skill Definitions

Verbose skill files use more tokens. Review your custom skills and cut boilerplate:

Anything over 500 words is likely longer than it needs to be. A good skill definition is 150–300 words. Remove examples, explanations, and redundant instructions — leave only what changes Claude’s behavior.

Fix 4: Use /compact or Context Compression

Claude Code has a /compact command that summarizes conversation history to reduce token usage without starting a new session:

This condenses prior turns into a shorter summary, freeing up context for continued work. Use it after completing a phase of work (e.g., after all tests are written, before starting implementation).

Fix 5: Process Large Files in Chunks

The pdf and docx skills are prone to context overruns when used on large documents. Process one section at a time:

Summarize only pages 1-10 of report.pdf. Do not read beyond page 10.

Then start a new session for the next section, bringing forward only the summary.

For the docx skill, request specific sections by heading:

/docx
From contract.docx, extract only the "Liability" section.

Fix 6: Configure supermemory Checkpointing

The supermemory skill is designed to persist context across sessions — use it proactively to avoid losing work when a session gets long:

Save checkpoint: [brief description of current state and progress]

At the start of each new session:

/supermemory
Restore latest checkpoint for this project.

This way you never need to reconstruct context manually after a context window error.

Fix 7: Create Lightweight Skill Aliases

If you regularly need a subset of a large skill, create a minimal alias that contains only the instructions you actually use. For example, instead of loading the full MCP skill, create a stripped-down version:

1. Use the existing template in templates/mcp-tool.ts
2. Keep tool definitions under 200 lines
3. Test immediately after writing

This alias consumes perhaps 200 tokens instead of 2,000. Review your skills directory for any that you only partially rely on — aliases pay off fast.

Fix 8: Reduce Tool Output Verbosity

Tool outputs (Bash results, file reads, grep results) consume context. Ask Claude to summarize tool output rather than showing it raw:

Run the test suite and give me only the failure count and
the names of failing tests. Do not show full stack traces.

Stack traces are some of the worst context consumers. With the tdd skill, this alone can extend a session 30-50%.

Understanding Token Costs Per Skill

Rough token costs to help you budget your sessions:

Session Architecture for Long Projects

For projects that span multiple sessions, adopt this pattern with the tdd skill:

- Implement AuthService to pass tests

Each session starts small, uses one or two skills, and ends with a checkpoint.

Loading skills sequentially rather than simultaneously is the core discipline. Match the skill to the current work phase:
