Signal Desktop is a convenient way to use Signal on a computer, but it introduces security considerations that don’t exist on mobile. Your desktop is more likely to be physically accessible to others, shared by multiple users, or compromised through software. Signal’s end-to-end encryption protects data in transit — it does not protect the Signal database on your hard drive, notification content visible on your lock screen, or messages readable by anyone who sits down at your unlocked computer.
These settings and practices close those gaps.
Step 1: Enable Screen Lock in Signal Desktop
Signal Desktop has a built-in screen lock that requires your system password after a period of inactivity. This is separate from your OS screen saver.
Settings → Privacy → Screen Lock:
- Enable “Screen Lock”
- Set timeout to 5 minutes or less for sensitive environments
This prevents someone who picks up your unlocked laptop from reading your Signal messages without also knowing your system password.
On Linux, Signal’s screen lock uses your system’s D-Bus authentication. Ensure your desktop environment’s lock screen integration is working:

Ensure this directory is on an encrypted drive (FileVault, BitLocker, or LUKS). An unencrypted drive negates Signal Desktop’s database encryption entirely.
To check what Signal has stored:

Note: Signal’s certificate pinning and sealed sender feature continue to operate through a proxy. The proxy provides network-layer anonymity but does not change Signal’s encryption behavior.
Step 6: Note Permissions and Prevent Data Leaks
Minimize clipboard exposure
Signal Desktop can read and write your system clipboard when you copy messages. On shared systems, clipboard managers (common on Windows and some Linux setups) may log everything you copy from Signal.
Check for running clipboard managers:

Disable any clipboard history tool if you regularly copy sensitive Signal content.
Screen sharing
Signal messages are visible in screenshots and screen shares. When screen sharing in a meeting or remote session:

Memory considerations
Signal message content exists in plaintext in RAM while Signal is running. On systems with hibernation enabled, RAM contents can be written to disk. For sensitive environments:

# Or encrypt swap with LUKS (best practice for encrypted systems)
Step 7: Keep Signal Desktop Updated
Signal Desktop updates automatically on macOS and Windows through Squirrel. On Linux, the Snap or Flatpak versions also auto-update.

- Avoid using Signal on public networks where traffic analysis is practical

- The recipient’s device deletes the message after the timer expires, but your local copy also disappears

Signal Desktop introduces vulnerabilities that don’t exist on mobile:
Physical access threats: Anyone with access to an unlocked desktop can read Signal messages without knowing your password if the screen lock is disabled. Screen lock timeout of 5 minutes means brief absences risk exposure.
Shared computer threats: Family members or colleagues on the same computer can access Signal if your user account isn’t logged out. Set strong OS passwords and ensure Signal locks on logout.
Malware threats: Desktop malware with user-level access can read Signal messages from RAM or the database before encryption. This is the most serious practical threat to Signal Desktop security.
For high-threat scenarios, consider Signal Mobile only, accessed through a dedicated device kept physically secure.
Step 14: Audit Your Signal Desktop Security Checklist
Run through this quarterly:
- Verify screen lock is enabled and timeout is 5 minutes or less
- Review linked devices in Signal Mobile and remove any unfamiliar ones
- Check that notification privacy is set to “No name or message”
- Confirm Signal is updated to the latest version
- Review disappearing message settings on frequently-used conversations
- On Linux, verify keyring integration is working (
