AskSpace, Q&A for Confluence

AskSpace lets people ask questions inside Confluence, get answers from colleagues, and keep the answer that worked. It's a Forge app with a UI Kit interface and Forge SQL storage. Everything runs on Atlassian, and the app makes no calls outside your Confluence site.

What you get

WhereWhat it does
AskSpace (apps menu, global page)The Q&A home. Lists every question you're allowed to see. Search, filter by topic, show Unanswered or My questions, and sort by newest, most votes or recent activity. Questions asked here are site-wide.
Q&A (space sidebar, space page)Q&A for one space. Questions asked here are visible only to people who can view the space.
Ask about this page (byline on pages and blog posts)Questions linked to the current page or blog post. They are visible only to people who can view it.
AskSpace questions (macro)Embed a topic's questions, or only unanswered ones, on any page. The settings are topic, this space or all spaces, filter, and 5/10/20 per page. The macro's Ask a question button always creates a question in the current space, even when the macro lists all spaces.

The ask form always says who will see the new question (everyone, one space, or one page/blog post).

Anyone who can see a question can answer it. Answers are plain text. Line breaks are kept and nothing is rendered as HTML. They load 10 at a time (Show more answers), and each further page leaves out the answers you already have, so votes that reorder answers in the meantime never make one appear twice or go missing. One question can show up to 1,000 answers.

You can vote up or down on questions and answers. You get one vote per post and can change or remove it, but you can't vote on your own posts. Only the person who asked can accept an answer, and they can undo it. The accepted answer is always shown first.

Comments go on questions and answers, up to 50 per post, and all of them are shown. You can edit your own question or answer, and delete posts under the rules below.

Permissions

AskSpace uses the Confluence identity of the person using it (their Atlassian accountId). That identity comes from the Forge invocation context and never from data the browser sends.

ActionWho
See a questionFor a site-wide question, anyone logged in who can use the app.<br>For a space question, people who can view the space.<br>For a page question, people who can view the page. Page restrictions apply.
Ask, answer, comment, voteAnyone who can see the question, space or page.

Accept or unaccept an answerThe person who asked the question only.
Delete a questionIts author, while it has no answers.<br>Confluence administrators, always.<br>Space administrators, for questions in their space. For a page or blog post question, that is the space the content is in now.
Delete an answer or commentIts author, Confluence administrators, and space administrators (for their space, as above).

Here's how the checks work.

Lists leave out questions you can't see and don't show how many were left out. Load more appears only when another question you can see exists, with one exception. A single list request examines at most 500 questions (or runs for 10 seconds), and if it hits that limit first, Load more is shown so nothing you can see is skipped. Its cursor is encrypted and works only for you and that exact search. So it reveals no id, date or score.

A page question can only be filed under the space the page is in. If the page later moves to another space, the question still shows on the page (and on the AskSpace home), but it's no longer listed on the old space's Q&A page. The first time someone opens the page's Ask about this page list after the move, AskSpace checks the page's new space with Confluence and files the questions that list shows under it, so they then show on the new space's Q&A page too. Until then it's listed under neither space.

License

AskSpace is a paid app (Forge licensing is enabled). When a site's license isn't active, AskSpace is read-only. People can still read questions and delete posts as the rules above allow, but they can't ask, answer, comment, edit, vote or accept.

Limits

ItemLimit
Question title8–150 characters (600 bytes)
Question details10,000 characters (20,000 bytes)
Answer2–10,000 characters (20,000 bytes)
Comment1–600 characters (1,800 bytes); 50 per post
Byte limitsEmoji and some scripts use 3–4 bytes per character, so text made only of emoji has a lower limit (for example 5,000 emoji in an answer).
Invisible charactersZero-width spaces, bidi overrides and isolates, control characters and stray Unicode tag characters are removed (tag characters in the England, Scotland and Wales flag emoji are kept). Minimum lengths count visible characters as a reader sees them. A letter with accents or an emoji counts once, and spaces, invisible characters, lone accent marks and blank-looking filler characters (Hangul fillers, the blank Braille pattern) do not count.
TopicsUp to 5 per question. Each is 1–32 letters, numbers or dashes, stored in lowercase.
SearchUp to 100 characters and 5 words. All words must match the title, the details or a topic. %, _ and ! are matched literally.
Lists20 per page by default, 50 at most. "Load more" uses a cursor.
Answers shown on a questionThe accepted answer first, then 10 at a time by votes (Show more answers), up to 1,000 per question
Long postsA post shows at most 60 lines. Further line breaks are shown as spaces, and no text is dropped.

Search uses SQL LIKE matching on the title and details. It isn't full-text search. There's no stemming or ranking, and results follow the chosen sort order.
